What is MES?
Manufacturing execution system: definition, difference from ERP and WMS, implementation
MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is the production execution system that collects and processes machine, operator, quality and material data on the shop floor in real time. Below you will find the definition of MES, how it differs from ERP and WMS, how it relates to OEE, and how long implementation takes.
What is MES and what does it do?
MES (Manufacturing Execution System) collects data from machines, operators, quality, materials and energy on the shop floor in real time and makes it traceable, measurable and manageable. Unlike ERP's corporate-process focus, MES works like the shop floor's live brain: what is produced on which machine, how productively each operator works, and which downtime happened for which reason are recorded second by second. argemas MES has been applying this logic in 200+ factories since 2002, working fully integrated with all your corporate software.
The difference between MES and ERP
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) manages corporate processes such as orders, purchasing, costing, stock and finance; it operates at an hourly-to-daily level. MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is the real-time brain of the shop floor; it monitors machines, operators and quality with second-by-second data. The two work integrated: ERP passes the order to MES, and MES feeds actual production back to ERP. argemas offers both layers as separate modules; your existing Logo / Netsis / SAP ERP can stay in place. You can digitalize just the production layer.
The difference between MES and WMS
MES tracks what happens on the production line (operations, operators, quality, downtime). WMS tracks what happens in the warehouse (racks, pallets, shipments). MES is the shop floor's second-by-second brain. WMS is the warehouse's second-by-second brain. When they work together, the material a work order requires is fed to the line by WMS in the right sequence, and the finished product goes back into the WMS addressing system. argemas offers both together, providing closed-loop traceability from order intake to shipment.
MES and OEE: how is efficiency measured?
How long does an MES implementation take?
Depending on project scope and factory size, between 6 and 24 months. In a typical mid-sized textile or automotive-supplier plant, the first modules go live within 3-6 months. Full integration and maturity are reached in 8-12 months. Complex multi-site rollouts can extend to 24 months.
MES software with KOSGEB support
Yes. Arge Bilişim's solutions are among the products eligible for support under the calls of KOSGEB's 'Digitalization' programs. Moreover, the company owns projects supported by the TÜBİTAK TİDEP/TTGB and KOSGEB R&D programs, the technical documentation required during the application process is provided by the Arge Bilişim team. AI-supported MES: what AI does in argemas
In the argemas Manufacturing Execution System, artificial intelligence and machine learning are used in the production functions below. Each item links to the page that describes it in detail.
AI-supported assignment optimization
Evaluates real-time operator productivity and quality data, operation-similarity classification and operation difficulty levels together, and suggests the line balancing. When an operator changes mid-shift, it re-optimizes the line setup.
Assignment optimization moduleAI-based advanced planning and scheduling (AI-APS)
Decides which order runs on which line, on which date and in which sequence, using recorded line efficiency per product, quality results and setup times. Re-optimizes the schedule on a new order, due-date change, capacity loss or line stoppage.
AI-APSEnd-of-day output prediction
Using machine learning, live quantity reports for operations show how many units each operation will produce by the end of the day if things continue this way, so measures can be taken before bottlenecks form.
Big data and AI applicationsPredictive maintenance
Analyzes analog machine data (vibration, current, temperature) from @rgeROVER and @rgeHYPATIA devices with machine-learning models. When an anomaly is detected, it assigns a maintenance task to technical service automatically.
Predictive maintenance moduleAI Layer
Lets users ask production questions in natural language. Forecasts order delivery and the monthly target, and flags delay and breakdown risk with its evidence. Work orders, maintenance requests or plan changes start only through an authorized role's approval workflow.
